Over the last 20 years, we’ve grown from a small company, run out of our home in Del Rio, to a new, state-of-the-art baking facility. Our new Austin bakery produces thousands of corn and flour tortillas every day, then delivers them to restaraunts and hotels all over central texas.
Even though our production has increased over the years, we still make everything the old-fashioned way, like our grandmothers used to. For example, we use only locally grown Texas corn in our recipes and still use the traditional lava stones to grind it.
Our history: What began as a way to help make ends meet fast became a successful business...
It all began in 1972 in the small border town of Del Rio, Texas, when Tomasa Picos and her children started making flour tortillas out of a small room in the back of the family home. Using Mama Tomasita’s flour tortilla recipe, handed down to her when she was a child in her family of 10 brothers and sisters.
The Picos family started supplying tortillas to local meat markets so that they could sell with their barbacoa and menudo on weekends. What began as a clandestine underground tortilla company, Fiesta Tortillas finally made it’s way out of the back of the family house and established itself as a full-fledged business that continued to operate in Del Rio until 1986.
Recently out of the Navy, and with no real plans for the future, Jaime Picos and his wife Elvira, decided to move to Austin, Texas in 1984. With no business experience, almost no financial backing, a few pieces of borrowed equipment, and tons of determination and blessings, Fiesta Tortillas opened its doors. The first months in an old, 1200 sq. ft. shopping center were trying times for Elvira and Jaime. Production consisted of about 25lbs of flour, then the shop was closed down so they could find convenience stores and restaurants that would be interested in buying that day’s product.
Word quickly spread about Fiesta Tortillas and after 7 years, we moved into a 4000 sq. ft. warehouse in the east side of Austin where we remained for 11 years and continued to grow at a tremendous pace. Quickly outgrowing the east side Austin location, but unable to construct a larger building at the time, Fiesta Tortillas continued at the location despite a cramped operation.
Late in 2000 Fiesta Tortillas bought 3 acres of land and built its present day facility in early 2002. Fiesta Tortillas now operates a brand new state-of-the-art facility, capable of running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We are proud to say that we still service customers that have remained loyal to Fiesta Tortillas for the past 20 years and are a big reason for our success. We have grown one customer at a time and now service over 365 customers that range from small, family-owned restaurants (who we owe a lot of our success to) and national restaurant chains to 5-star hotels and food service companies.
All of this would have not been possible without God, my Lord and personal Saviour, my wife Elvira who wouldn’t let me give up and always believed in us and to our many loyal customers that have become more like family.
